Smeaton states, “The Holy Spirit supplied prophets and apostles, as chosen organs, with gifts which must be distinguished from ordinary grace, to give forth in human forms of speech a revelation which must be accepted as the word of God in its whole contents, and as the authoritative guide for doctrine and duty.”.

I don't know where my bias came from but this was a surprisingly good read. Already in the sixties a new direction was taking place in Reformed theology. I was especially impressed with Berkhof's sympathetic though not uncritical handling of Pentecostal theology's claims at the time. Berkhof is both knowledgeable and charitable in handling of other thinkers. I can see why Moltmann could still recommend this when his short volume on pneumatology, *The Source of Life*, was published.
This is a very interesting book on the Holy Spirit from a Reformed perspective. Berkhof begins the book by noting how difficult and even embarrassing the doctrine of the Holy Spirit is for theologians. He states at the outset that he is pioneering and expects much needed correction to follow his treatment of the doctrine. I appreciated this beginning to the book.
