Results: Bitrate vs CRF/CQ. Plotting the bitrates versus CRF/CQ values show significant deviations in the scale of encqsv versus x264/x265. Noting the log scale, it seems that encqsv consumes almost two to three times the bitrate of x264 at the same numerical value.

Today we did some manual testing. Our goal was to see if the results look representative before we start automating everything.
We encoded a raw video file directly from the source. It is going to be used as a reference to calculate PSNR.
After we also encoded one SD(standard definition) video with FFmpeg using two different codecs . The codecs are x265 and x264. For each codec we used three different CRF values. CRF 22, 23, and 24. At the end we got 6 videos. Three encoded with x265 and CRF 22,23, and 24. And three encoded with x264 and CRF 22,23, and 24.
So, now we have 6 videos and we want apply some losses on them. We streamed the videos on an impaired network(fedora computer) and applied packet loss on the streams. The packet loss values were 0.1 %, 0.2 %, 0.3 %, 0.4 %, 0.5 %.
The files were saved using VLC dump raw input. Later we transcoded them into raw video format(.yuv) in order to compare them to the original raw video file.
The results look promising although there are some “strange” values. We hope to improve the results with a large number of iterations in order to get statistically more relevant results. See the table and graph below.

Well, x265 is still under development so the results are varying a lot. With x264 we get a little bit more relevant results. After we expand the testing to multiple videos with higher resolutions we hope to achieve better results.

What is H.265 (HEVC)?
H.265 is also called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). As its name suggests, H.265 is twice high efficiency than H.264 when encoding video. Namely, it halves the bit rate at the same level of video quality compared with its predecessor. It has a a wide range of applications, covering all compressed video ranging from low bit-rate streaming applications (YouTube, iTunes, Vimeo, Facebook, Instagram) to various HDTV broadcasts over terrestrial, cable, and satellite. It is also commonly used for Blu-ray Discs, DVD storage, IP packet network, and digital cinema applications with nearly lossless coding.
